Bivi—for morning light . . .
On the road in the American Northwest.

Bivouacking the Morning Light . . .

When you camp, you will quickly retune yourself to the significance
of the four primal directions, South, West, North and East. Both
in terms of the direction of incoming wind and weather, and,
of course, the movements of light and warmth. What better
discipline for the aspiring student of architecture and urban design
than to walk the land. And to select auspicious campsites.

If at all possible, I like to setup camp, what I call a 'bivi' (short for bivouac,
from the German, Biwacht = an additional nightwatch at a camp), with an
eye towards the morning light. That way I can prepare myself early,
long before the show begins.
