Electric, Screaming, Colors . . . . On the road in North America.
WOW! Or I guess one should at least say, LOUD!
How we wish to be noticed. And its fun, too.
Just this makes me wonder: It seems to me that
weve pumped up our use of artificial color in exactly the
same way, for exactly the same reasons, as weve turned
up the volume of electrified sound. To get noticed.
But, just like women acting like men, it only seems charming
once in a while. Then a saturation point is reached. And
we tacitly and largely unknowingly begin to collectively
wonder about why the Western world has become such
a noisy, mean-spirited place.
I first found out about this quite by accident when I used to conduct
a great deal of NEW MUSIC with large ensembles, frequently
at horrendous volumes. Makes ones ears ring. And yet,
compared to commercial musicsay, the kind of works
performed 24/7 on MTVit was a relative whisper.
Nowadays, I think exceptions to natural limits ought
best be sharp & short, like lightning. Afterall, who would
want to live inside a thundering drum all the time?
