kings candle, winter aspect

King's Candle, winter aspect . . . (Verbascum thapsus) Introduced to North America from Europe.

Photo shows the first year growth of the Common Mullein. During

the next growing season, it will shoot up to face level with its central
spike of pale yellow flowers. I've borrowed here another nice common
name from the Dutch (Konigskaars), the King's Candle, so-called for
its flowers, but also that the dried foliage can be used as a fire starter.
