sharp crystals, spring snow

Snow Flowforms, the Alps  Wind-driven snow, moving with very sharp, cold crystals close
to the snow surface. To the right is an ascending ski track which is slowly disappearing into the
hard-crusted surface. By morning, it will be gone. Notice the strong Chinook winds descending
from the South over the high ridges in the background (a difference in altitude of more than
1600 meters from where the photograph was made. These complex, swiftly changing,
conditions are what make alpine skiing so exciting and challenging.
