The Sunflower Way, view West . . .
On the road in the American Northwest.

The Beauty of the Sunflower Way . . .

Biking on the flats, into the afternoon headwinds
coming straight out of the West, sometimes I'll turn
a question over in my mind. Just in a light, playful way,
like looking out the kitchen door now and then to see
what kind of mischief the kids are up to
in the backyard.

Today it's: A new poetry, a new music, a new art
deeply rooted in place. What would they look like?

Consider that the sunflower: it has no intention of
being beautiful or popular, and yet it is loved and
admired everywhere—on the wild prairie, the roof-top
garden, in the child's drawing.

Along the ways of wild Northwest, perhaps what is
most dear to me is beauty unaware of itself, humble
and persistent in growth, rooted unselfconsciously
—were it stands.
