The Golden-crowned Kinglet or Regulus satrapa (male at
bottom),
a delicate, active bird, which lives mostly in North American coniferous
forests. (Shown at twice their actual size.)
"The kinglet is a common name for birds of the genus Regulus of the
Old
World warbler family, Sylviidae, including two very small, active North
American birds. Both measure about 10 cm (4 in) in length and have olive
gray backs, light wing bars, and paler undersides. The golden-crowned
kinglet, R. satrapa, has white stripes over its eyes and a bright
cap, orange
in the male, yellow in the female, that is bordered with black. The male
ruby-
crowned kinglet, R. calendula, has a small, bright red head spot.
Kinglets
feed almost exclusively on insects. Found from coast to coast, they nest
in
northern coniferous forests and winter south to Guatemala."
