Pavanefor a lost friend
What if my little redstart no longer sang,
What if my little friend had lost its way;
Would there still be spring? Would there still
Be the silence of mountain snow in May?
Long April nights I have waited
And the skies still do not clear.
I fear my little redstart is lost, is lost.
Africa, Oh Africa:to the highlands of the North.
And the Stonepine stands as it always has,
On the granite which knows naught of the rush
Of time, and waits, and waits, and waits,
Listening for the sound of our little friend,
The sound of its song to the peaks of the East,
To this the first new day of my redstart spring.
